We have used Positive Electrical & Solar to work on faults in an old house that we bought. Being an older home, this presented many challenges but the team were thorough & knowledgeable, keeping us up to date the whole time. We are very pleased with the workmanship, and that they could fix all of the problems. I would highly recommend the team at Positive to anyone & will be using them again in the future.

    About the Lossnay system

Lossnay is Mitsubishi Electric’s heat recovery ventilation system. Most ventilation systems work by simply pushing air in or pulling air out – which means any heat already in your home goes with it. Lossnay works differently.

Inside every Lossnay unit is a heat exchanger core. Warm stale air leaving your home and cool fresh air coming in pass through this core at the same time. As they do, the heat from the outgoing air transfers across to the incoming air, warming it up before it enters your home. The two airstreams never mix – you get fresh outdoor air, pre-warmed by the heat you’ve already paid for. In summer the process works in reverse, with the cooler indoor air taking the edge off incoming warm outdoor air before it enters.

Depending on the model, Lossnay recovers between 86% and 93% of the heat energy from outgoing air – making it one of the most energy-efficient ventilation systems available in New Zealand.

Comparing ventilation systems for Northland properties

Different ventilation systems suit different properties and budgets. Here’s a straightforward comparison to help you understand the options:
    SystemHow it worksBest forNorthland suitabilityConsideration
Lossnay (Heat Recovery Ventilation)Exchanges stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air, recovering 86–93% of heat energy through a heat exchanger core. Filters allergens and pollutants.New builds, renovations, commercial buildings, rentals, allergy sufferersWell suited – does not rely on roof cavity conditions, handles humidity effectivelyHigher upfront cost than some alternatives; more complex to retrofit into finished homes
Positive pressure (HRV, DVS)Draws air from the roof cavity and pushes it through the home to displace moist airExisting homes with accessible roof cavities in drier inland areasVariable – roof cavity air quality affects performance; less predictable in coastal or high-humidity areasPerformance depends on roof cavity conditions, which vary across Northland
Extract-only ventilationExtracts moist air from wet rooms such as bathrooms and kitchensSpot ventilation in wet rooms as a supplement to a whole-home systemUseful as part of a broader ventilation strategyDoes not supply fresh air to the rest of the home
Natural ventilationRelies on open windows and passive airflowMild climates, properties where occupants actively manage airflowLimited during Northland winters when homes are closed upInconsistent – depends on occupant behaviour and outdoor conditions
Passive stack ventilationUses temperature and pressure differences to move air without mechanical assistanceHeritage buildings, low-energy projectsUnreliable in Northland’s mild, humid climateDifficult to control; airflow rates can be unpredictable

    Frequently Asked Questions

Lossnay is Mitsubishi Electric’s heat recovery ventilation system. Unlike positive pressure systems such as HRV or DVS, which push air from the roof cavity into the home, Lossnay continuously exchanges indoor and outdoor air through a heat exchanger core – recovering 86–93% of the heat energy in the process depending on the model. The two technologies work differently and suit different properties and budgets.
Lossnay can be installed in new builds, renovations, and existing properties. Working at the design or build stage gives more flexibility with ducting placement, but our team has experience retrofitting systems into finished homes with minimal disruption.
Lossnay reduces indoor moisture by continuously replacing stale, humid air with fresh filtered outdoor air. Combined with adequate heating and insulation, it can significantly reduce condensation and mould – a particular consideration in Northland’s damp coastal climate.
A Lossnay system can form part of a compliant ventilation solution under the Healthy Homes Standards. Get in touch and we can advise on what’s required for your specific property.
Yes – the two systems complement each other well. A heat pump manages temperature; Lossnay keeps the air fresh without losing the energy the heat pump has put into it. Because incoming air is pre-warmed by the Lossnay core, your heat pump also has to work less hard to reach the desired temperature.
Lossnay systems use low-wattage fans and recover the majority of heat from outgoing air, keeping running costs low. Contact us for specifics based on the model suited to your property.
Yes, Mitsubishi Electric offers commercial Lossnay configurations for offices, retail, hospitality, schools, medical facilities, and other commercial premises. We design and install systems tailored to the building’s size and requirements.
We recommend an annual service for residential systems. The core element should be checked and cleaned regularly to maintain performance and air quality. Commercial systems may require more frequent attention depending on usage.
Most residential installations can be completed within one to two days depending on the complexity of the ducting. We’ll confirm the timeframe as part of your free quote.
No – as a registered electrical contractor, Positive Electrical handles all electrical work as part of the installation.
